Surprise: The Reaction

WOW! We had some serious traffic on the blog yesterday! Everybody wanted to see how we were telling the Princess we were going to Disney World for the Social Media Moms Celebration.

If you missed it, we made a video telling the Princess SURPRISE and explaining what was going on. She was ABSOLUTELY surprised.

When I picked her up at school, she was complaining that she didn’t feel good. Her tummy hurt. She felt achy. I was seriously trying not to panic. We’ve had a rough winter, and it seems she’s only well for like three weeks at a time. We’re nearing the end of the three weeks.

I ushered her out to the car where she was surprised to see Daddy. We were supposedly heading to the dentist (at 1:30 in the afternoon) and Daddy doesn’t usually go with us. We sat her in the car and gave her my laptop on which to watch the video we had made. Daddy recorded her and I took still shots. This is the (unedited) reaction:

Now, those of you that don’t know my child might think that’s not much of a reaction. Those of you that do will know that the grinning from ear to ear and eyes shifting back and forth is pure joy and excitement while her brain tries to adjust her entire week’s schedule to the fact that we are going out of town. (She gets that from her mama.) She was THRILLED. She was EXCITED. She was SURPRISED.

After the being overwhelmed wore off, she started to get really excited and by the time we hit the FL state line was giddy. Interestingly, she’s been much more appreciative this trip than any other one. She’s been here at least nine times – always in the fall. It seems that changing it up has made her realize it truly is a gift and blessing to be able to come.

And it is SUCH a blessing to be at Disney for this conference. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us! I’ve got some posts lined up as I don’t know how much time I’ll have to actually blog while I’m here. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures and share them with you when I can! If you twitter, be sure to follow me (kathill).

Surprise!!!

Today is the day we head to Disney Social Media Moms. To say that My Sweetie and I are excited is an understatement. We have been bursting. Why bursting? Because we haven’t told the Princess yet that we’re going! As in I took her to school today, and she thinks its a normal Wednesday with soccer practice tonight. But it is in no way a normal Wednesday.

WE’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!

How we have kept this a secret I have no idea. It has been SO hard! However, I think it’s going to be worth it. This is our one and only chance to surprise her with a trip to Disney. We go every fall so going in the spring is totally out of the realm of her imagination. We can’t wait to tell her and watch her reaction.

The biggest question was how to tell her. We decided to make a video to show her when she gets in the van. I’m picking her up from school a little early. She thinks she has a dentist appointment. (FYI – She HATES the dentist so was dragging to start the day.)  When she sees Daddy in the car and the car packed, she’ll know something’s up. We plan to show her the video below right away to explain the surprise. I can’t wait!!

The plan is to record her reaction. We’ll share it with you as soon as you we can.

We’re Going to Disney World!

The House of Hills LOVES some Disney World. We go EVERY year. Seriously, every year. We honeymooned there. We took the Princess when she was just three months old, and she’s been every fall since. We’ve even been on a Disney cruise. We LOVE Disney.

That is why I am SO excited to be able to go to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration next week. I will be hanging out with some AMAZING bloggers and hearing some GREAT speakers. I can’t wait. Of course, I also get to spend time with my family. That’s going to be the best part of the entire week. Time with my family at the happiest place on earth. Hopefully we’ll make some more memories like these…

The COOLEST part of this trip is that the Princess doesn’t know we’re going. She has NO IDEA. We are totally going to surprise her! Isn’t that AWESOME?! We typically go at the same time each year, so this is probably the ONLY time we’ll ever be able to surprise her with a trip to see the Mouse. So shhhhh… don’t tell!

And don’t worry. I plan to take TONS of pictures and tell you all about it when I get back.

Do you have anything you would like me to investigate while I’m down with the Mouse? I’ve got some ideas for posts, but would love to know what you want to know about!

Disclosure: I paid a small fee for the conference which includes hotel accommodations and park tickets. All opinions are my own.

30 Day Give: Day 17 – 25

30-Day Giving Challenge

I haven’t done a great job of keeping up with letting you know about all the giving the House of Hills has been doing. We’ve just been too busy giving and vacationing!

Having done our biggest give of the month with our Operation Christmas Child party, the rest of our plans seem rather paltry. However, we’re continuing to give as we see needs.

*We sent coupons to a family stationed overseas through Coupons for Troops over at The Happy Housewife. I was so excited when she said she had more families in need a few months ago. This was the first of many packages we will be sending. I love that there is someone who can use my unused coupons!

*I sent a beautiful burp cloth from Studio MCA Designs and a restaurant gift card to a new mom. I’ve got another burp cloth to give away so be looking for that soon! Here’s a preview of the one you could win!

*I sent a t-shirt that I had bought at my friend Katie’s fundraiser to a friend of ours because she wanted one to honor the occasion.

*I gave bags from Thirty-One Gifts with Disney cups and the new North Point Christmas CD to all my siblings’ families. They were a huge hit. Each individual piece was met with cries of “ooooohhh.” It was fun to give a gift  just because.

*I bought a package of glow sticks at BJs a few months ago when they had them out for Halloween. I brought them along to give to the cousins one night during our trip. There were enough that I could give this gift twice – once on Tuesday night and once Thanksgiving night. Oh. My. Goodness. The fun that was had running around with glow sticks after the sun went down. INSANE FUN! A highlight of the trip this year I think. We will add this to the permanent Thanksgiving trip list for sure!

*I was courteous and helpful to people in the Disney Parks. This my friends is a GIVE. It was amazing to me the lack of manners and patience of people while they were supposed to be on vacation.

* I bought the Princess a silly light up glow thingy at the Disney Parks. I usually don’t purchase this particular item and make her use her own money. However, I decided to give to her this year.

*We got the Princess’ silhouette done at the Magic Kingdom. We have gotten this done every year (except one we forgot) and given Grandma a copy for Christmas. Hey Grandma, guess what you’re getting for Christmas!

I’m sure there are other little things we’ve done in the last week that are escaping me right now. I know that when I went to bed each night, I felt like a “give” had been done. And that’s the point isn’t it. To go to bed each night feeling that you’ve somehow done something to make the world a better place than it was that morning when you woke up. You could be doing something as simple as holding the door for a mom loaded down with toddler and shopping bags to something as dramatic as spending the day in service of someone in need. Each act affects someone. Each act shows God’s love. Each act is a GIVE.

Top Ten Tuesday: Disney Cruise

We got home on Thursday from a Disney Cruise. We had an AMAZING time while on the boat, but then had to come home immediately after docking because our Princess got sick. In fact, she’s still under the weather. I took her back to the doctor Monday, and he thinks she may have actually had a rarer form of flu. Of course she did. My Princess has always got to be the over-achieving, unique one of the bunch. So, we’re resting at home one more day in hopes of returning to school tomorrow. I wonder if anyone will remember her.

While we’re resting, we’re remembering all the fun we had on the cruise before the fever hit (and well, even after it hit while she was drugged with Motrin). Here’s some of the things we will never forget.

1. The beautiful boat! We were on the Disney Wonder, and it was gorgeous. How they keep that thing so clean and looking so good with over 800 kids running around, I have no idea. But, beautiful it is. This is the chandelier that hung in the “lobby.”

2. The incredible service! If you have ever been to Disney, you know how amazing their service is. I mean, they even have a school for service and books written about their service. That same amazing service is even better on the cruise. I kid you not. It was AWESOME!! Our Room Host realized that my husband was icing his back several times a day (a whole different story for another day) and made sure that two ice buckets were full of ice in our room at all times. The same serving crew follows you around from restaurant to restaurant each night for dinner. They knew the second day what the Princess was going to need to be happy – a bowl of sliced strawberries and a glass of milk – and those things appeared IMMEDIATELY after we sat down. AMAZING SERVICE! I wanted to take them home with us.

3. The kids activities! The Princess LOVED the Oceaneer’s Lab where she hung out a good bit while we were on the ship. They had scheduled activities almost all day long, and she planned her day around these. In addition, when we were on Castaway Cay (their private island), they had Scuttle’s Cove where we could check in the kids and then go fall asleep on the beach under the palm trees. It was a kid’s paradise in both places. The Princess’s favorites were the time when she got to make Flubber and the two mystery adventure activities she did. SO MUCH FUN!

4. Deck 9! A pool, an ice cream machine, unlimited pizza and chicken fingers, deck parties, character autograph signings… They had it all on deck nine.

5. The restaurants! I talked about the service, but now lets talk about the food! Oh my, oh my, oh my! My Losing It! friends. I didn’t try real hard to be good. I’ll admit it. I will say that I did NOT have a Diet Coke, and I limited myself on the carbs just because I just didn’t want them. But I did ENJOY some fine dining. Two nights My Sweetie and I ordered all the appetizers on the menu – because you could! I tried things I’d only ever seen on Food Network television. The food was out of this world. And, the restaurants themselves were entertaining. There are three main ones (plus an adults only one we didn’t visit), and each one had it’s own personality. Our favorite, which we knew it would be, was Animator’s Palate. The walls were so entertaining, we almost forgot to eat.

6. Castaway Cay! Disney has an island. Yes, the do. And it is FABULOUS! My Sweetie, who hates the beach, said that if all beaches were like Castaway Cay, he’d take me whenever I wanted to go. He’s not quite sure how, but the sand didn’t even stick to his feet. I’m thinking they must have brought special sand in for that. Or maybe, we’re just not used to being in the Bahamas. Anywho, amazing day at the private island. We were onshore by 8:30 and went back to the ship at 3:30. This is when the Princess started feeling poorly, or I think we might have stayed on the beach until the boat left at 5. All we had to do was bring our bag of sunscreen and our camera. They had all the rest. We grabbed towels as we exited the boat and then found some chairs with a hammock next to it in the shade of an umbrella and palm trees. They fed us when we got hungry and had water for us to drink. AMAZING DAY!

7. Pirate Night! Arghhhhhh!! After our day on the beach, we napped and then partied like pirates! We had a pirate themed dinner and then a Pirate Party on deck 9 where Mickey flew in on a zip line to fight Captain Hook. Then, there were fireworks followed by a dessert buffet and a showing of “Pirates of the Caribbean” on the HUGE screen by the pool. It was a SUPER FUN night that I don’t think we’ll ever forget!

8. The Shows! Each night (except Pirate Night), there is a Broadway style show for you to see. All three were musicals. All three were fun. All three had very talented people. I think I was most impressed with the dancing on the first night as it was a REALLY rough night at sea. I was having trouble sitting up in my chair and walking down the hall. How they all managed to stay upright while dancing on stage is a true mystery to me. The talent was great, and the Princess loved each and every show. In fact, she went picture happy on the last night when they had many of the actors out in the lobby for us to meet.

9. Characters! We were on the DISNEY cruise. And, Disney means Disney characters. And. they were EVERYWHERE! Each day, they published a schedule of where they were going to be, but they popped up all over the place off schedule too. We learned quickly to ALWAYS have our autograph book and camera with us. We stood in a long line for the Disney Princesses. Well, let me clarify. I stood in a long line while My Princess flitted in and out of it to go do dancing lessons in the lounge area. However, that and Captain Jack Sparrow on Castaway Cay were the only really long lines. It was great to see My Princess still thrilled to meet the characters. There’s still a little girl inside her.

10. The Family Fun! Since Disney is ALL about FAMILY, there were organized family activities all the day long. There were dancing lessons and game shows and karaoke nights and bingo and deck parties and much, much more. My Princess was most interested in the game shows. She LOVED them and wanted to participate in all of them. Her favorites were when she sang “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” at Family Karaoke Night and when she and her daddy participated in the Mickey Mania Game Show while I had a mommy break.

There you have it. The TOP TEN things we’re remembering about our Disney cruise. We’re remembering so much more of course and are still smiling about it here at the House of Hills. Probably even more memorable than any of those things is the fact that we were celebrating the births of these two amazing people.

I’m so blessed that they were born.

And yes, Disney Cruise, you will see us real soon. Just as soon as we can save up enough money to do it again.

Linked to Top Ten Tuesday.

We're Home!

The Hill Family is back in the ATL! Whoop! We had an amazing time on the cruise. SO many things to share. I’ll be doing a Top Ten Post on Tuesday with some of my favorites.

The picture above was from Pirate Night. We went all out and dressed up to party with Mickey and the gang.

We ate amazing food all week and had a wonderful time while relaxing. My Sweetie’s back did great. We were really worried about that. Unfortunately, the Princess developed a virus while we were on the boat so we had to cut our trip short. Thankfully, we found a sympathetic cast member who refunded our money for the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and our additional hotel reservations. So thankful for that.

Still nursing the virus at the House of Hills. The Princess is doing better than on the ride home. She was pitiful then…

Disney Tips: Your Backpack

This post originally ran in 2010, and I’m giving it a facelift in July of 2013. EVERYTHING in this post is still true! I’ve been to Disney many times since I originally wrote this and still take the time to make sure my backpack is stocked appropriately.

Disney Tips: Your Backpack from HouseofHills.org

We’re heading to see The Mouse this weekend. Actually, we’re going to spend four days with The Mouse on a Disney Cruise and then a couple days in the parks. Are we excited? YES! Are we ready? NO!

Side note: My Sweetie seriously put his back out over the weekend. As in ER on Monday and has been FLAT on his back in the bed ever since. Please pray that he has some relief so we can actually go on this trip. We’ve got major drugs at work, but prayers would be better.

Anyhow, I mentioned on Twitter/Facebook that I had pulled out the “Disney Backpack” in order to get read for our two days in the parks. A couple of friends asked what I put in said backpack so I thought I’d share with all of you too. Let me qualify the list that’s about to come with the fact that I am a serious Type A personality (if you haven’t figured that out from the blog – duh!) and a planner. I plan EVERYTHING! Even if I don’t plan it on paper, it’s planned in my head. So, some (uhum – My Sweetie) would say that I carry too much with me in the parks. Of course, that is until we need something that is in the backpack, and I save the day.

You need to start with a backpack that is comfortable for you:

Below is the backpack we took on our honeymoon to Disney. Yes, we honeymooned at Disney. This backpack served us well for many years, but was retired as the Disney backpack two years ago.
Disney Tips: Your Backpack from HouseofHills.org
Last year, we used a new backpack. It is MUCH lighter, but doesn’t have as many pockets. I felt okay moving away from so many pockets because I no longer had a toddler and could take a minute to find exactly what I wanted. When you have a toddler(s), the quicker you can get to what you need, the better. Therefore, the more pockets, the better.

Here’s what I keep in our “Disney Backpack”:

  • Baggie w/spare socks for each member of the family
  • Baggie w/spare panties for Princess and Mommy (who has Crohn’s and always has spare panties)
  • (Until she was five, I brought a spare outfit for the Princess. In a baggie of course. Used it almost every day.)
  • Butt cream – Princess never seems to wipe well when on vacation. Probably that horrible toilet paper.
  • Baggie w/Princess’ lanyard of trading pins
  • Light up thingy for night-time fun. (You can sometimes get these at the Disney Store before you go on your trip. They are usually cheaper there than the $10 your going to pay at the park. Princess buys her own. I refuse to pay for lights.)
  • Pouch w/Benadryl, Tums for Princess & parents, Bug bite cream (sensitive skin child), Tylenol/Motrin for Princess & parents, lipstick for mommy, lipgloss for Princess
  • Small First Aid Kit – alcohol swabs, bandaids, Neosporin
  • Sunscreen
  • Extra baggies – Gallons in case it rains. Sandwich for leftovers from breakfast buffet – those grapes will come in handy later in the day.
  • Autograph book and pen  Note about the autograph book – we get a new one each year. They  sit on her bookshelf in chronological order. She likes to go through them and see who she met each year.
  • Any lists we’ve made for the day
  • Snacks – at least two for Princess, one each for Mommy and Daddy
  • I start the day with at least two water bottles.
  • Camera – actually, that’s usually in my pocket Update: Does anyone carry a camera anymore. Now, it’s just my phone.
  • Wallet – I carry our room key, my ID, our insurance cards, one credit card, some cash – this is also in my pocket
  • Hand sanitizer

In addition to the Disney backpack, I pack a “Rain Bag” that gets taken to the park if there is a chance of rain. It was always with us when we had a stroller as it just got hung on or put in the stroller. Now, we are choosier about when we take it as it goes on someone’s back. It has saved us twice now.

Here’s what I keep in our “Rain Bag”:

  • A few more gallon baggies – just in case.
  • A raincoat/poncho for each person.
  • At least one umbrella.
  • A set of extra socks for everyone.

We learned a lesson about the socks. You can get soaked, but if you have dry socks to change into, all is right with the world and you can keep on going. The rest of you will dry. Your socks – they stay wet. Update: My friend J went to see the mouse and made the choice not to pack extra socks. See how that worked out for her here.

So that’s the Disney backpack. It DEFINITELY works for me. It has for twelve years.

Is there anything you carry into the parks that I didn’t list? Share with us please!
Update: Be sure to check out the comments for some great ideas. Some I added to the above list.

And, for all my friends heading down to see The Mouse this week, my friend OhAmanda did a great post yesterday on getting ready to go to Disney. You should check it out!
