Top Ten Tuesday: Blissdom: To Go or Not To Go

So, I’m thinking of taking this whole blogging thing to the next level. Like really thinking about it. I’ve picked out my own domain name and will probably buy it today. I’m researching places to host the blog and people who might be able to help me design it. I’ve been blogging pretty steadily for about a year, and I like it. I really do. And, I’m getting better at it. I’m getting better at writing. I’m getting better at networking. I’m getting better at putting information out there that people actually want to read.

But, if I’m going to do the blog thing “for real,” then, I need to learn more. LOTS MORE. So, I’m considering going to BLISSDOM. Many of the ladies I follow on Twitter and some of my IRL friends went last year. They had a blast, and I was green with jealousy while following their tweets. So, I’m considering going. Any time I consider something, I list the pros and cons. I thought I’d share my current list with you Top Ten Tuesday style and see if you have any to add on either side. Help a girl out please!

PROS
1. I would learn A LOT about blogging and all that can go into it.

2. I would get some much needed girl time.

3. I would get to carpool (hopefully) with OhAmanda, ItsCome2This, TheVioletFig, and SimplyStaci. I know – the Sisterchicks – you’re all jealous now.

4. I would get to meet online friends so they could become IRL friends.

5. I would get to go to Nashville, which is a beautiful city!

6. I would have a GOOD time.

CONS
1. I would be away from my family.

2. I would have to work my tail off at the beginning of the week to get all the work done for my job that would need to be done.

3. I would be out of town part of two weeks in a row as I have a work retreat the week before.

4. Um… That’s all I’ve got on the cons….

So, what do you think? What am I missing? Should I go? Should I take the blog to the next level?

He loves me. He really loves me.

We’ve been having one of those days, weeks, months here at the House of Hills. You know those seasons of life when you just can’t seem to get ahead. Where one thing after another keeps piling on, and you feel like you’re drowning. Where you look around your house and at your to do list and wish you could just walk out the door. (Not that I would ever actually just walk out the door. I mean my #1 strength on the Strength Finders test is “responsibility.” I’m genetically programmed NOT to walk out the door.) Do you know those times I’m talking about. Where you look up at the heavens and just say “Seriously? Are you kidding me?” Ya, it’s been like that lately.

1. My husband’s back went SERIOUSLY out at the beginning of Sept. Like ER went out. Like wasn’t sure I could get him to the ER.

2. We had just moved into our temporary house at the beginning of Sept. There are still boxes on every level.

3. We went on a cruise in the middle of Sept. even while my husband’s back was not great. Note – buy trip insurance. You might actually need it.

4. My child got the flu on the cruise.

5. My husband started physical therapy for his back. He’s not supposed to bend, twist, or lift.

6. When you can’t bend, you can’t put on your own shoes. Your wife has to do it for you. Humbling for both of us.

7. When you can’t bend, lift, or twist, you can’t do any household chores. NONE.

8. You never realize how many household chores there are until they are not being done by anyone but you.

9. When you can’t bend, lift, or twist, you really don’t want to be home alone with your child in case there is some kind of an emergency. Which means, I need to be with my fabulous Princess ALL THE TIME.

10. My Princess got strep throat last week. She’d only been back in school one week since the flu. That’s when I wanted to run. But, I didn’t.

Through it all, our marriage has actually grown stronger. My Sweetie tells me EVERY day how much he appreciates me. He thanks me for each thing I do. He tells me he loves me and that I am strong often throughout the day. Then, yesterday, he asked me to get a box out of the car for him (since he can’t bend, lift, or twist), and I opened the trunk to find this…

Proving that my husband REALLY does love me. And, even better, he really KNOWS me.

He makes my heart smile.

Top Ten Tuesday: Disney Cruise

We got home on Thursday from a Disney Cruise. We had an AMAZING time while on the boat, but then had to come home immediately after docking because our Princess got sick. In fact, she’s still under the weather. I took her back to the doctor Monday, and he thinks she may have actually had a rarer form of flu. Of course she did. My Princess has always got to be the over-achieving, unique one of the bunch. So, we’re resting at home one more day in hopes of returning to school tomorrow. I wonder if anyone will remember her.

While we’re resting, we’re remembering all the fun we had on the cruise before the fever hit (and well, even after it hit while she was drugged with Motrin). Here’s some of the things we will never forget.

1. The beautiful boat! We were on the Disney Wonder, and it was gorgeous. How they keep that thing so clean and looking so good with over 800 kids running around, I have no idea. But, beautiful it is. This is the chandelier that hung in the “lobby.”

2. The incredible service! If you have ever been to Disney, you know how amazing their service is. I mean, they even have a school for service and books written about their service. That same amazing service is even better on the cruise. I kid you not. It was AWESOME!! Our Room Host realized that my husband was icing his back several times a day (a whole different story for another day) and made sure that two ice buckets were full of ice in our room at all times. The same serving crew follows you around from restaurant to restaurant each night for dinner. They knew the second day what the Princess was going to need to be happy – a bowl of sliced strawberries and a glass of milk – and those things appeared IMMEDIATELY after we sat down. AMAZING SERVICE! I wanted to take them home with us.

3. The kids activities! The Princess LOVED the Oceaneer’s Lab where she hung out a good bit while we were on the ship. They had scheduled activities almost all day long, and she planned her day around these. In addition, when we were on Castaway Cay (their private island), they had Scuttle’s Cove where we could check in the kids and then go fall asleep on the beach under the palm trees. It was a kid’s paradise in both places. The Princess’s favorites were the time when she got to make Flubber and the two mystery adventure activities she did. SO MUCH FUN!

4. Deck 9! A pool, an ice cream machine, unlimited pizza and chicken fingers, deck parties, character autograph signings… They had it all on deck nine.

5. The restaurants! I talked about the service, but now lets talk about the food! Oh my, oh my, oh my! My Losing It! friends. I didn’t try real hard to be good. I’ll admit it. I will say that I did NOT have a Diet Coke, and I limited myself on the carbs just because I just didn’t want them. But I did ENJOY some fine dining. Two nights My Sweetie and I ordered all the appetizers on the menu – because you could! I tried things I’d only ever seen on Food Network television. The food was out of this world. And, the restaurants themselves were entertaining. There are three main ones (plus an adults only one we didn’t visit), and each one had it’s own personality. Our favorite, which we knew it would be, was Animator’s Palate. The walls were so entertaining, we almost forgot to eat.

6. Castaway Cay! Disney has an island. Yes, the do. And it is FABULOUS! My Sweetie, who hates the beach, said that if all beaches were like Castaway Cay, he’d take me whenever I wanted to go. He’s not quite sure how, but the sand didn’t even stick to his feet. I’m thinking they must have brought special sand in for that. Or maybe, we’re just not used to being in the Bahamas. Anywho, amazing day at the private island. We were onshore by 8:30 and went back to the ship at 3:30. This is when the Princess started feeling poorly, or I think we might have stayed on the beach until the boat left at 5. All we had to do was bring our bag of sunscreen and our camera. They had all the rest. We grabbed towels as we exited the boat and then found some chairs with a hammock next to it in the shade of an umbrella and palm trees. They fed us when we got hungry and had water for us to drink. AMAZING DAY!

7. Pirate Night! Arghhhhhh!! After our day on the beach, we napped and then partied like pirates! We had a pirate themed dinner and then a Pirate Party on deck 9 where Mickey flew in on a zip line to fight Captain Hook. Then, there were fireworks followed by a dessert buffet and a showing of “Pirates of the Caribbean” on the HUGE screen by the pool. It was a SUPER FUN night that I don’t think we’ll ever forget!

8. The Shows! Each night (except Pirate Night), there is a Broadway style show for you to see. All three were musicals. All three were fun. All three had very talented people. I think I was most impressed with the dancing on the first night as it was a REALLY rough night at sea. I was having trouble sitting up in my chair and walking down the hall. How they all managed to stay upright while dancing on stage is a true mystery to me. The talent was great, and the Princess loved each and every show. In fact, she went picture happy on the last night when they had many of the actors out in the lobby for us to meet.

9. Characters! We were on the DISNEY cruise. And, Disney means Disney characters. And. they were EVERYWHERE! Each day, they published a schedule of where they were going to be, but they popped up all over the place off schedule too. We learned quickly to ALWAYS have our autograph book and camera with us. We stood in a long line for the Disney Princesses. Well, let me clarify. I stood in a long line while My Princess flitted in and out of it to go do dancing lessons in the lounge area. However, that and Captain Jack Sparrow on Castaway Cay were the only really long lines. It was great to see My Princess still thrilled to meet the characters. There’s still a little girl inside her.

10. The Family Fun! Since Disney is ALL about FAMILY, there were organized family activities all the day long. There were dancing lessons and game shows and karaoke nights and bingo and deck parties and much, much more. My Princess was most interested in the game shows. She LOVED them and wanted to participate in all of them. Her favorites were when she sang “I Won’t Say I’m in Love” at Family Karaoke Night and when she and her daddy participated in the Mickey Mania Game Show while I had a mommy break.

There you have it. The TOP TEN things we’re remembering about our Disney cruise. We’re remembering so much more of course and are still smiling about it here at the House of Hills. Probably even more memorable than any of those things is the fact that we were celebrating the births of these two amazing people.

I’m so blessed that they were born.

And yes, Disney Cruise, you will see us real soon. Just as soon as we can save up enough money to do it again.

Top Ten Tuesday: Moving Twice This Year

What? What? I’m blogging two days in a row? What? What?
So excited that my life is SLIGHTLY calming down. The move has been made. The majority of the boxes have been unpacked. My Princess is happily asleep in her new room. My Sweetie and I are sitting on the couches with our dueling laptops. College football is on the TV. Life is GOOD!

We’re gonna doing it again in six months. What? What? Why would we move again in six months? Let me tell you – top ten style.

1. Our house was on the market for nine months. It finally sold all in a hurry at the end of July. We closed September 1. We didn’t buy anything.

2. My AMAZING friend from high school (well, actually we were in 5th grade together, but BFFs in high school) is currently out of the country for a two year stint in Canada with her family for her hubby’s job. Her house was sitting empty…. See where this is going.

3. I wanted the Princess to start the school year in the same school she was going to finish the year. School starts here at the beginning of August. My AMAZING friend’s house is in the same district we KNOW we want to live in permanently.

4. We moved into my AMAZING friend’s house this weekend. While it’s a BEAUTIFUL home, it’s not our permanent home. We’re house sitting. We’re loving it.

5. We’re not paying a mortgage. We got a nice check at the closing and we’re adding to it each month, but we don’t owe anybody anything right now. No bank owns us.

6. We were able to pay off the credit card from the closing payment. That’s right. We are currently DEBT FREE. We have no consumer debt. NONE. For the first time in our married life. It is amazingly freeing. We’re working hard to make sure we stay that way. God has given us the ultimate gift of starting over. We totally recognize it and are humbled by His generosity and grace.

7. We are able to help out an AMAZING friend’s family by doing those little things that need to be done regularly to keep up a house (and not have it empty), and they help us by giving us a place to be while we pray about our next move.

8. The main goal of moving was to get us closer to my office and our church. House sitting here gets me 8 minutes from my office (and 6 of those are to get out of the neighborhood) and much closer to church. We will buy or build close to here as well. It’s in the area we in which want to ultimately reside permanently.

9. We REALLY feel like this is what God wanted us to do. It’s a whole different blog post to be written, but God has lined up the stones on this path so perfectly that we really had no question about moving temporarily into this home. We feel in our heart of hearts that it’s what He wants us to do. Only two other times in my life have I felt His guidance as strongly as I do right now. He’s right here, hands on our shoulders, guiding us down the path He has paved for us. We haven’t even a sliver of doubt that we are in His will right now.

10. Did I mention we are now DEBT FREE!

So, we moved this weekend, and we’re gonna move again in six months or so. We aren’t unpacking all our boxes of course. As we packed, we made sure to label those things that we weren’t going to need in our temporary home. The picture albums and knick knacks don’t need to come out here. Because we were so specific in our packing, we’re already unpacked and settled.

Can I get a Whoop! Whoop!

Top Ten Tuesday: We're moving in a month!

We have a contract on the house. The inspection has been done. The due diligence period is almost over… Looks like we’re moving. In a month. Oh my!

Actually, we’re moving a bit before then because we are blessed enough to have the opportunity to house-sit for a high school friend (LOVE YOU girl) whose house is in the school district in which we want to live. Which means the Princess starts school in a little over a week, and I’ve got to get it in gear! Here’s what needs to happen and soon…

1. Gather all the paperwork to register the Princess in a new school system. (Keep in mind we’re only moving about 40 minutes away.) It’s been awhile since I’ve had to do this, and man-o-man are there lots of pieces of paper to gather. Good grief! My appointment is Friday morning. Praying I have all that I need.

2. Get the utilities on at the new house. Ya, it’s been ten years since I’ve done this one. With all the choices and decisions to make on cable alone, this is going to be hard.

3. Cancel all the utilities on the current house. That’s just lots of phone calls. Whew! Thinking about it though. Since I haven’t done this in a decade, I’m wondering if you can do some of this online. Hmmm….

4. Get the repairs done on the current house that they asked for in the inspection. Thankfully, there were only THREE things they asked for after the inspection. THREE! Praise the Lord!

5. Do yet another purge. We did a MAJOR purge in the fall when we put the house on the market. A MAJOR one. We actually have empty rooms and an almost empty closet right now. However, we can still get rid of more. If we’re not going to use it, I don’t want to move it.

6. Pack items that we won’t need at our house-sitting house and mark them accordingly. We’re only going to be in that house a few months. There’s no reason to unpack all the yearbooks, pictures albums, Princess keepsakes, etc. Those things need to go in boxes and labeled accurately so we can just put them in the basement.

7. Apparently sign the Princess up for gymnastics in the new area and not soccer. This decision was made today by the Princess herself. I’m surprised, but if that’s what she wants to do this fall, then that’s what we’ll do. I have a feeling we’ll be back to soccer in the spring though.

8. We need to go school supply shopping. I LOVE school supply shopping, and so does the Princess. We’ve got our list and plan to hit the stores on Thursday. I’m sure we’ll come back with more than we need. We always do. (This one isn’t really about the house, but it’s got to be done.)

9. Gather the troops to move us. We’re right on the cusp of the age where we can move ourselves – also known as – feed your friends so they will lift heavy stuff for you. I think we can find some folks to move the big stuff. I can move lots of the little stuff in my mama-van. If you’re interested in being part of the moving party, let me know. I always cook it up for friends that help!!!

10. Praise Him! We always knew that God would move us when He was ready for us to move and when He had found the perfect people for our house. He has orchestrated getting the Princess into the school we wanted her to be and at the beginning of the year. The couple who is purchasing our home is EXACTLY where we were when we bought it. They’ve been married about a year, and you can tell they’re buying the home in which they’re going to start their family. I’m so excited for them. The entire situation has His hand in it. Truly Blessed.

I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff. Like lots of stuff.

Does anyone have a post about moving? I need lists. LOTS of them!

Top Ten Tuesday: Ahhh, Vacation

Have you ever REALLY needed a vacation? Like REALLY needed one. Needed to step of the treadmill, stop the madness, get away? Ya, that’s where I was last week. I REALLY needed this vacation.

Here are the top ten things I’m doing this week…

1. NOTHING – as in literally just sitting

2. Riding the waves with this cutie. She is LOVING the surf – to the point where she has scrapes up her legs from the shells but wants to keep riding them in.

3. Reading – I actually read a book yesterday. For fun. Not for work. Not for book club. Just for fun. Ahhhh….

4. Catching up on blogs I love. I haven’t had time lately to read all the ladies I enjoy reading. I’m fixing that this week.

5. Writing some blog posts. If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been slack there too – no time. Enjoying some writing time this week.

6. Selling our house – hopefully. We received a decent offer Sunday night. Now it’s the back and forth of the counter-offers. PRAYING that it all works out.

7. Staring at this view and praising God for His creation. Beautiful.

8. Kayaking for the first time. That was an experience. These two were WAY better at it (and cuter) than me.

9. Sleeping. Just sleeping. Like going to bed at 9:30 and getting up at 7:30. That kind of sleeping. Ahhhhh…

10. Hmmmm… not sure what else. There’s nothing really planned. For those that know me – that is shocking. But needed. Just being is what we needed to do. We might head into Charleston in the AM. The Princess wants to go to the Children’s Museum. Maybe we’ll lunch at Sticky Fingers – My Sweetie’s favorite place. Who knows?

What do you like to do on vacation?

Top Ten Tuesday: Excuses/Reasons Not To Walk

So, I’ve been Losing It! for awhile now, and one of the things that has REALLY (and I mean REALLY) helped take off the weight is walking.

Now, I can’t walk on a treadmill. Well, I mean I can walk on a treadmill. You just stand there and walk for goodness sakes. However, I DO NOT LIKE to walk on a treadmill. One, I feel like I’m going to fall and so hold on to the bars for dear life. Two, it is so BORING! Doesn’t matter if I’m listening to a book/music/podcast or reading. I just watch the clock.

What I have found is that I enjoy (as much as I’m able to enjoy exercise) taking a walk. However, I like to take a walk first thing in the morning. It’s really the only time I have. So, a little over a month ago I started getting up at 5am to walk. And, it was working well. I get time with just me and God to start my day. I do lots of planning during that time too.

Unfortunately, I took a little break over this past weekend (a four day break mind you) and although I’ve done it, it has been SO HARD to get up these past two days to walk. I’ve literally curled up in my bed and let these excuses reasons run through my head as to why I shouldn’t get up.

1. I’m tired – Duh, it’s 5am, of course I’m tired.

2. “Aunt Flo” is visiting – she’s a good excuse reason for lots of stuff isn’t she

3. It’s hot – It is “Africa hot” here in the ATL

4. It’s muggy – kinda goes with the hot in the ATL

5. It might rain – thus the mugginess

6. I should cuddle with My Sweetie – who happens to be WAY on the other side of our HUGE bed

7. The Princess might want to come snuggle in a minute – ya, she usually heads straight downstairs for tv time

8. I deserve a break. I’ve been working so hard – this one is the most evil! Mind warping I tell you

9. I just won’t eat as much today – um, what is that thinking? Seriously, not eat as much. I’m already down tons of calories

10. I forgot to get my clothes out and I don’t want to wake My Sweetie digging for them – ya, My Sweetie can sleep through WWIII

So those are my excuses. And they are excuses. What are your excuses for not exercising today?

Oh, and please note that even though it took me TWENTY MINUTES to get out of bed on the last two mornings. I did get up. A MAJOR accomplishment in my opinion. And, my body thanks me – I think.

Top Ten Tuesday: No Internet

My Internet is out. I’m typing this in Word and hoping that at some point I can copy and paste into my blog.

It is amazing how much my life has become dependent on the Internet, and a strong signal. Here are the ten things I’m not doing right now because I can’t. Remember, I’ve got no Internet.

  1. Reading email. I love email. I love reading email. I miss my email.
  2. I was about to email my cousin who is coming in town next week for our family reunion. I think she is coming in on Friday night. Or maybe it’s Thursday. I don’t remember. She’s staying at my house. I should know when she’s coming. I can’t look it up because I use Gmail, which is GREAT when you have Internet access. I don’t have any.
  3. Blogging. Oh, I’m still blogging here in Word, but I can’t link up to anything, and I’m about to need to do some linking.
  4. Reading OhAmanda’s post “I Want To Be Wilder.” I mentioned on Twitter earlier that I am afraid to read it. I’m afraid God will use her to convict me of something. Like REALLY afraid. Now I can’t read it. Whew! Safe for a bit. Okay, I could go read it on my iPhone, but I’m still afraid, so I’m using this excuse.
  5. Twitter. I’m addicted to Twitter. I’ve checked it twice since the Internet went on my iPhone. See, that still works ‘cause of the whole 3G thing. I love technology. However, I really like my Tweetdeck on my computer where it’s all organized.
  6. Playing a little Webkinz. Webkinz relaxes me. I love the games. And, I earn money for the Princess. It’s a win win.
  7. Uploading the update for my BFF’s Caring Bridge site. Cancer sucks – even when there is Internet. Just an FYI.
  8. Looking at pictures of the Princess and her cousins at Callaway Gardens. My mom uploaded all the pictures today. I can’t see them ‘cause they’re out there on the World Wide Web. And, I’ve got no Internet.
  9. Listening to My Sweetie harvest his crops. I think it’s time for his harvest in Farmville, and he can’t get online. Oh no! I hope they don’t go bad. Can they go bad? I don’t know. I don’t farm.
  10. Facebook. I almost forgot Facebook!! That would be the cousin to Twitter. They both hold a place in my heart. I can Facebook on the iPhone, but it’s much better on the big screen where you can see big pictures. So, I’m missing it.

There you have it. The ten things that I can’t do right now because I’ve got no Internet. Also known as the list of things that make me the pathetic geek that I am.

I miss the Internet.

Top Ten Tuesday: Princess at Callaway

The Princess is at Callaway Gardens this week. My mom and step-dad take the oldest grandchildren for a week in the summer. This year they took FOUR grandchildren. Away. For a week. They are amazing!

The thing I think is so awesome is that my mom and step-dad used to take my siblings and me to Callaway Gardens when we were young. In fact, the Princess has stayed in the same cottage that I did as a kid. Crazy huh?

When you stay in the cottages at Callaway Gardens, you are automatically enrolled in “Summer Family Adventures.” That means that there are activities planned for you all week long. Monday through Friday, the kids go to a day camp where the performers from the FSU circus are their counselors. It’s GREAT fun. So much fun in fact that I could barely understand the Princess when she called last night to tell me all that had happened already. She was SO EXCITED and talking SO FAST!

Here are just a few things the Princess will get to do this week as a part of Summer Family Adventures at Callaway Gardens:

1. Learn to juggle

2. Arts and Crafts

3. Swim in Robin Lake

4. Jump on the net in the circus tent

5. Go fishing

6. Participate in a miniature golf tournament

7. Play on Iceberg Island

8. Learn about various habitats and the animals in them

9. Play beach games

10. Hang out with her cousin Hamilton ALL day long! This is especially great because Hamilton doesn’t live in Metro-Atlanta like the rest of the cousins, so time with him is an extra treat. Oh, and they’re only ten weeks apart in age, so they get to be the cool big cousins and stay up a bit longer than the younger ones.

I know the Princess is going to have an AMAZING week. Do I miss her? A bit. Will I give her big smooches when she comes home? For sure. Am I thankful that she gets this super fun crazy week with her cousins and grandparents every year? ABSOLUTELY!!

Disclosure: Callaway Gardens has no idea I wrote this post so no compensation. Just me sharing my thoughts.

Top Ten Tuesday: Summer and the Senses

Summer has fully arrived here in the South. Ahhhh… summer. I love summer. I especially love how your senses become even more alive in the summertime. There are certain scents, sounds, sights that totally mean summer – like:

1. Suntan Lotion: We lather it on here at the House of Hills as there is a history of melanoma in the family. It’s a morning ritual for the princess as she’s going to be outside at some point. The smell of suntan lotion just screams “pool” to me.

2. Chlorine: I love how even after she’s taken her shower, the Princess still has that chlorine scent on her skin. Reminds me at cuddle time that she had a fun day.

3. Bug Spray: If we’re out in the evening, the Princess and My Sweetie MUST have bug spray. They both attract biting insects like crazy. Me, not so much. Maybe I’m not as sweet as they are.

4. Lawnmowers: Now, mowing the lawn is one of My Sweetie’s least favorite things to do, but the sound of the lawnmowers going in the neighborhood just mean summer to me.

5. Thunderstorms: We get some AMAZING thunderstorms here in the South. They remind me of the All Mighty Power of God. I love to cuddle in bed with the family and listen to them  outside.

6. Screaming Children: Screaming in a good way. That joyful, unbridled screaming that accompanies lots of fun being had either in the backyard or at the pool.

7. Meat on the Grill: Mmmmmm… grilled meat. There is no better summer smell.

8. Tan Lines: Not my tan lines. The Princess’s tan lines. There is nothing cuter than her little white booty running across down the hall to jump in the shower. I know at some point it won’t be so cute, but right now it still is, and it reminds me of when she was smaller and let me pinch that little white booty.

9. Flip Flops: The sound of flip flops walking down the hall – summer

10. Tastes: There are too many to list – it could be it’s own list. Burgers, Hot Dogs, Corn on the Cob, Watermelon…. You know all those summer foods. Yum!!

So what are your favorite sounds, sights, scents, tastes of summer? What screams summer to you?
