What to serve? Southern Style.

The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming! Well, a few of them. The Yankee branch of the family is coming down for our family reunion in June. My mom was born and bred in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Then, she migrated south and stayed. Most of these folks have never been to the true South (Florida doesn’t count). We want to show them some serious Southern hospitality.

Yesterday, my mom and I were working on the menu for the weekend. We, of course, want to introduce them to some Southern Favorites.

So, when you think of Southern food, what do you think of?

What should we be sure to include?

Got any recipes to share?

Help a girl out here!

  1. Hey I live in Yankee country! I live in MA. I “pahk the cah”, have a pocket book and drink tonic-lol. Definitely do fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, gravy etc. Or mexican food! Can you believe my inlaws had TACO BELL for the first time a couple of years ago?? And my MIL had never had a Whopper Jr until recently? She things both of those things are the best! Taco Bell’s are few and far between here. There are lots of Mom and Pop places. Most New Englanders are very loyal to their favorite holes in the wall joints. New Englanders are definitely unique! Taco Bell’s are few and far between here. So serve up some good, friend, home cookin’.If you like cream gravy make sure to make some brown gravy too. My MIL hates cream gravy. I LOVE it!

    • We are actually doing Mexican one night we think because they’ve never really had it. So funny since it’s a staple for us.
Fried chicken is not currently on the menu, but I might have to add it. Hmmmm…..

    • Hey Kathy – I was kidding about Yankee Potroast, but I’ve never met a northerner I couldn’t sweet talk with some sort of corn pudding or souffle. They love corn, and when they get it in the form of cornbread pudding – even the northern palette cannot resist.

Country fried steak (although not the leanest choice) is easy and very yummy. Serve it up with rice and gravy and some green beans on the side. OR with a fresh salad with lots of tomatoes. That’s definitely southern and more healthy. : )

And one of the easiest southern dishes that yankees should love is peach pie or cobbler. Who can resist peaches?

      And what time is dinner?

Love ya – best wishes. Remember – be true to your soul! They’ll enjoy what ever you make!

  2. Ugh, for breakfast you have to do Sausage gravy and “cathead”” biscuits! And if I were coming to visit you, you would have to make pulled pork BBQ and Hushpuppies…. ok, forget the BBQ, just a big plate of hushpuppies… with BBQ sauce and ketchup. YUM! We have a southern comfort food take out restaurant here in Washington state and the owners always laugh at me… I want 1 fried chicken breast and 3 large orders of hushpuppies. No wonder I cant loose any weight!

  3. Biscuits are a must and Burger Inn has the best ones on this side of Hwy. 5! (not to mention reasonable) Banana pudding is about as southern as it comes along with pecan pie. I’d be hitting the Varsity and Krispy Kreme. I have lived here all my life so feel free to ask me for recipes since I do love to cook! 🙂 For home cooking…macaroni and cheese (homemade of course), fried okra, and greens. Be sure to dish up some grits (cheese or plain).

  4. Georgia Peach Cobbler: 1 stick butter, 1 cup self rising flour,1 cup milk ,1 cup sugar, 4 cups fresh peaches. Melt butter and stir in flour and sugar. Dump in sliced peaches in the center and cook at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown!
(If you don’t tell anyone you can use sliced canned peaches. I would never tell.) Yummmmmmmm!
