I'm Booking It in 2010

There have been lots of fun challenges out there in blogger land with the new year. People are setting goals in all kinds of areas. It’s fun to see what people plan to do with their new year. When I came across a Book challenge – or posting series – I was intrigued. Those that know me know I LOVE LOVE LOVE to read. So, I’m all about sharing with you what I’m reading and finding out what you’re reading too.

Reading is already a critical part of my 2010 plan. In my goals, I’ve outlined that I want to read at least six leadership books and six personal development books. I’ve firmed those lists up a good bit since yesterday. Thanks to all who provided some help. I have NEVER read this many non-fiction books in one year. NEVER. So, this is going to be a serious challenge for me.

In addition, I belong to a book club in the neighborhood. This fabulous group of ladies gets together once a month to discuss a book we’ve all agreed to read. We typically read fiction, but every once in a while a memoir will pop up. We take turns pitching books to the group and usually choose about four months out. So, I know what I’m reading as far as fiction for the next few months.

Then, there are the books we read with The Princess. We (bothy My Sweetie and I) curl up in the big bed with the Princess every night and read aloud for about twenty minutes. Yes, both of us with the one kid. She has no idea how spoiled she is. But, we love love love that family time. Previous to this year, it was always me reading aloud. However, My Sweetie is reading the current book since he chose it. I look forward to reading new books during this time too.

So here are some books I want to read this year:

Leadership:

Strength Finders 2.O by Tom Rath

7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Think Orange by Reggie Joiner

Good to Great by Jim Collins

Making Vision Stick by Andy Stanley

I need one more in this area. Any ideas?

Personal Development:

Parenting by the Book by John Rosmond

Principle of the Path by Andy Stanley

Crazy Love by Francis Chan

The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace

Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss

The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted by Gary Chapman (with My Sweetie)

The ME I Want to Be by John Ortberg

Fiction:

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls

Velva Jean Learns to Drive by Jennifer Niven

These are all for the book club in the neighborhood. I know I’ll read at least one book a month with them. I just don’t know what they’ll be. I’ll share when I do.

With the Princess:

Kingdom Keepers II: Disney At Dawn by Ridley Pearson – our current read. Excellent for Disney fans – lots of intrigue and mystery.

Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder – I gave her the set for Christmas and can’t wait for her to get started. I’ll probably end up reading her the first one and she will read the rest on her own.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling – We had to stop reading this one at night as her brain was working so hard to comprehend all that was happening that she wouldn’t fall asleep. However, we are reading it in the afternoons sometimes.

I’m sure there will be more this year. I have a feeling Kingdom Keepers III will make it on this list.

That’s my reading plan for 2010. Do you have one? If I may make some suggestions of books I’ve read in the last year or so that are AWESOME!

The Help by Kathryn Sockett

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Schaffer

Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Happy Reading!!!

  1. Visiting from Life as Mom’s blog. Looks like an interesting list. For your sixth Leadership book, I would recommend “Be a People Person” by John C. Maxwell (or any book by Maxwell – he’s a great writer with great ideas for developing leadership skills). Happy Reading!
